In this video, Dr. Matthew Davis, director of Crossroads Chiropractic, shares important information from today’s news showing that immune function decreases with age especially for women. A recent study has showed that fish oil may provide important support to a healthy immune system in healthy older women who use strength training exercise on a regular basis as a way to stay healthy. However, strength training, by itself, did not improve any of the immune parameters measured in the study.
It appears that strength training exercise along with daily fish oil increases phagocytosis. Phagocytosis is the immune systems response to foreign objects, including bacteria and viruses
Fish oil can be obtained from eating fish or by taking supplements. Fish that are especially rich in the beneficial oils known as omega-3 fatty acids include mackerel, herring, tuna, salmon, cod liver oil just to name a few.
A lot of the benefit of fish oil is from the omega-3 fatty acids that it contains. You may not be aware that the body does not produce its own omega-3 fatty acids. Our bodies do not have the ability to make omega-3 fatty acids from omega-6 fatty acids, which are what is found in our Western diet.
There are numerous benefits to fish oils beyond the immune support of a healthy older women that can be seen here.
