Chiropractor Sharpsburg GA - Got Milk or Not Milk?

milkIn this video, Dr. Matthew Davis, director of Crossroads Chiropractic, shares important information from today’s news looking at the link between milk consumption and increased bone fractures.

Milk is touted to build strong bones, however many studies have found that hip fracture rates are highest in populations with the greatest consumption of milk-drinking.

Milk contains high levels of a sugar called galactose.  Galactose is also used by scientists to cause premature aging in lab animals.  The equivalent of one to two servings a day can shorten their lifespan, cause oxidative stress, inflammation(which may lead to chronic illnesses and cancer), and brain degeneration.

A team of Swedish researchers followed a hundred thousand men and women for up to 20 years looking for the link between daily galactose consumption and mortality rates as well as bone fracture risk.

The researchers found that milk-drinking women had higher rates of death,  increased heart disease, and significantly  increased cancer. Three glasses a day was associated with nearly twice the risk of premature death, and significantly  increased bone and hip fractures.

Men had a higher rate of death with higher milk consumption, but did not have higher fracture rates.

Soured milk and yogurt, has an opposite affect on the body since the bacteria ferments away some of the lactose.

So what can we do to improve the overall health of our bones?  Simply add some weight-bearing exercise such as jumping, weight-lifting, and walking with a weighted vest or backpack, get enough calcium and vitamin D, substitute milk for yogurt and avoid phosphate additives.
