Chiropractor Sharpsburg GA - Can’t Fool Your Fat Cells

fat cellsIn this video, Dr. Matthew Davis, director of Crossroads Chiropractic, shares important information from today’s news  studies showing why the number of fat cells in your body always seem to increase.

Adipocytes, also known as lipocytes and fat cells, are the cells that primarily compose adipose tissue, specialized in storing energy as fat.

Fat cells numbers increase through childhood and adolescence while generally stabilizing in adulthood.

People who are obese tend to have more fat cells than those who are not.

Fat cells, or adipocytes, are not stagnant. The size of individual fat cells expands and contracts with weight gain or weight loss.

As with most cell types in the body, adipocytes die eventually. 10 percent of adipocytes die each year and are replaced at the same rate by new fat cells.

Several studies have found an increase in fat cell number with weight regain following weight loss. The fact that fat cell number can be increased but not decreased most likely contributes to the body’s drive to regain weight after weight loss.

As a result the strategies to reduce fat such as bariatric surgery and Liposuction, rarely are long term solutions.

Bariatric surgery patients, although lose massive amounts of weight, never decrease the number of fat cells in their body, and as a result will eventually regain the weight.

Liposuction on the the hand, reduces the number of fat cells in a person’s body, but studies show the weight lost is typically regained within a year. It isn’t known whether this regain occurs through the production of new fat cells or expansion of existing ones.

Beyond their role in storing fat, fat cells or adipocytes secrete proteins and hormones that affect energy metabolism.

There is only one way to lose the fat and keep it off.  Lifestyle changes!
