In this weeks video health tip, Dr. Matthew Davis, director of Crossroads Chiropractic, shares important information looking at the heart healthy benefits of eating a plant-based diet.
A team from Icahn School of Medicine in New York recruited over 15,000 participants for the diet study and monitored their health for 4 years.
The study included five different diet types:
Convenience - red meats, pastas, fried potatoes, fast foods
Plant-based - dark leafy vegetables, fruits, beans, fish
Sweets - desserts, breads, sweet breakfast foods, chocolate, candy
Southern - eggs, fried food, organ meats, processed meat, sugar-sweetened drinks and
Alcohol & salads - salad dressings, green leafy vegetables, tomatoes, butter, wine
According to the study, people who eat more fruits and vegetables are 42% less likely to develop heart disease than those who consumed fewer plant-based foods.
Many people find it extremely confusing understanding exactly what eating a plant based diet means. Does it mean only eating fruits and vegetables? Does it meaning a vegan, whatever that means? Does it mean eating nuts and beans? Can I actually eat fish or chicken some times? OMG, what to do, what to do…
I think the answer, is really a personal one. There are some that are very strict eating only grains, vegetable, fruits, legumes and nuts. While others will choose to add small amounts of fish, meat, poultry or dairy as they see fit.
Victoria Taylor, senior dietitian at the British Heart Foundation explained that eating plenty of fruit and vegetables, cutting down on salt and maintaining a healthy weight are all important parts of a balanced diet that helps lower the risk of heart disease and stroke.
