In this weeks video health tip, Dr. Samir Hajariwala, director of Crossroads Chiropractic, takes a look at the superfood, fiber.
Less than 5% of North Americans meet the recommended fiber intake of 25 grams for women and 38 grams for men.
Fiber in plants increases the growth of healthful bacteria, which converts the soluble and fermentable types of fiber into short chain fatty acids, promoting great health benefits to help:
▪ reduce inflammation
▪ lower high levels of blood sugar, cholesterol and blood pressure
▪ reduce hunger
▪ produce beneficial mucus that lines your colon to help prevent the harmful bacteria from penetrating there.
Eating foods containing soluble fiber help the good bacteria to overgrow the bad ones.
Soluble fiber is found in vegetables, fruits, beans, whole grains, nuts and other edible seeds.
Your current diet and lifestyle determines which bacteria live in your gut. Here are some ways you can change your colon bacteria:
▪ Increase your intake of vegetables, beans, fruits, unground whole grains, nuts and other seeds.
▪ Daily exercise to promote the growth of your colony of healthful bacteria.
▪ Avoid mammal meat, fried foods, foods with added sugar and all drinks with sugar in them.
▪ Regular chiropractic care which allows your central nervous system to function appropriately by taking irritation off of the nerves going to the stomach and/or intestines, which positively influences your digestive system and the health of your gut.
Remember you and your family can be as healthy as can be, and it’s never too soon to start receiving chiropractic care. Your best source for everything health is your chiropractor.
