In this video, Dr. Matthew Davis, director of Crossroads Chiropractic, shares important information from today’s news looking at green tea and its anti-cancer super powers.
Tea drinking dates back nearly 5000 years, when it was traditionally consumed as a delicacy by the aristocracy in ancient China.
Green tea consumption is associated with a reduced risk of heart disease, stroke, and a lower mortality risk, and now there is growing evidence that green tea can slow cancer progression.
Green tea may interfere with each of the stages of cancer formation. The initiation of the first cancer cell, its promotion into a tumor (prevent the formation and growth of new blood vessels in tumors), and lastly, its progression and spread.
"It's all about the catechin content," says Beth Reardon, RD, a Boston nutritionist. Catechins are antioxidants that fight and may even prevent cell damage. Green tea is not processed much before it's poured in your cup, so it's rich in catechins.
Cancer is often initiated when free radicals oxidize our DNA, causing mutation. Within 40 minutes of drinking green tea, there is a spike in the antioxidant power of the bloodstream, which may lower oxidative damage to DNA and decrease the risk of cancer. There are lots of chemo agents that can kill cancer cells through brute force. Unfortunately, normal cells are also vulnerable to those chemo agents.
Green tea on the other hand has shown that after six cups, green tea compounds enter into the organs of the body causing cancer cells to commit suicide—apoptosis (programmed cell death)—while leaving normal cells alone.
The results of some studies clearly show that green tea antioxidants are toxic to cancer cells in laboratory experiments and indicate why health experts are so optimistic about their use in cancer therapies in the near future.
Can Green Tea Help Prevent Cancer? It appears that, more green tea you drink, the longer and healthier your life and the greater your protection from cancer onset.
