Chiropractor Sharpsburg GA - Fatty Liver Disease and Diabetes

Fatty Liver

In this weeks video health tip, Dr. Matthew Davis, director of Crossroads Chiropractic, takes a look at the possible link between fatty liver disease and diabetes.

It used to be the most common and well known form of Liver disease was a result of alcohol. In recent years we have come to find that as a result of the food we consume, sugar may now cause more liver disease than alcohol.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) occurs when excess fat is stored in your liver.  And now the latest research appears to indicate that Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) may may be contributing to the almost epidemic of pre-diabetes and type 2 diabetes.

Because the liver plays an important role in regulating the body’s blood sugar.  If you have a buildup of fat in the liver, it prevents the liver from accepting and processing the elevated sugar levels which result in them rising in the blood stream.

How do you know if you have a fatty liver?

People who store fat primarily in the belly are more prone to storing fat in their liver.  If you have a big belly and small hips, you are likely to be at a high risk for a fatty liver and diabetes.

The good news is…you can still elevate that fat from your liver buy:

Exercise:  Contracting muscles draw tremendous amounts of sugar from the bloodstream with the greatest effects during exercise and for up to 1 hour after.

Diet: Avoid foods that cause a high rise in blood sugar, especially sugar-added foods and sweetened drinks, including fruit juices and many unhealthy carbohydrates.
