Chiropractor Sharpsburg GA - Lack of Sleep Linked to Osteoporosis

OsteoporosisIn this weeks video health tip, Dr. Samir Hajariwala, director of Crossroads Chiropractic, takes a look at the link between lack of sleep and osteoporosis, low bone density.

With osteoporosis affecting over 10% of North American adults over 50, a recent study found lack of sleep (5 hours or less per night) may be having a major impact on your bone density.

According to the research women who slept 5 hours or less per night had lower bone mineral density and were more likely to have osteoporosis of the hip and spine than those who slept 7 or more hours per night.

One of the primary treatments for low bone density and osteoporosis in conventional medicine is the use of bisphosphonate drugs, which have been shown to weaken bones and cause micro cracks that heighten your risk for atypical bone fractures.

Here are some ways you can prevent osteoporosis and protect your bones.
1. Get 7-9 hours of sleep every night.
2. Take nutrients important for healthy bone growth and strength including vitamin D, vitamins K1 and K2, calcium, magnesium and collagen.
3. Engage in specific types of exercise that can help you build and maintain strong bones including strength training  and weight-bearing exercise.
4. Get regular chiropractic adjustments which have been shown to improve joint alignment and muscle function, reduce inflammation and degeneration; ultimately restoring mobility which can prevent falls and fractures associated with osteoporosis.
