Chiropractor Sharpsburg GA - Obesity linked to gut bacteria

In this weeks video health tip, Dr. Matthew Davis, director of Crossroads Chiropractic, shares important information looking at the link between gut bacteria and obesity.

The epidemic proportion of Americans (roughly 20% of children and teens & 70% of adults) who constantly battle the bulge and teter on or deal directly with obesity, we know the common causes for this unhealthy state usually compiles a life of an unhealthy diet, lack of exercise and possibly a genetic component. But now we have evidence that suggests that even though the factors we just mentioned are very important, it appears that our obesity epidemic may just be a result of some tiny microbes found living in our large intestines.

Since bacteria in your colon eats the same food that you do, what you eat determines which types of bacteria thrive there.

These bacteria determine how high your blood sugar rises after meals and how many calories you absorb from the food you eat.

A recent study of 84 children and teens showed the heavier participants had higher levels of gut bacteria that quickly convert carbohydrates into fats thus absorbing more calories from their food than the thinner children.

A review of several studies showed that eating a diet based on plant foods and restricting refined carbohydrates appeared to be a safe and effective way of changing colon bacteria to help control weight and high blood sugar.

Foods that encourage growth of the types of colon bacteria associated with obesity include sugared drinks, sugar-added foods, foods made from flour (ground whole grains) and all other refined carbohydrates.

By eating a diet of organic vegetables, fruits and seeds (beans, nuts and whole grains that have not been ground into flour) encourages the growth of bacteria that helps to prevent and treat obesity.
