In this weeks video health tip, Dr. Matthew Davis, director of Crossroads Chiropractic, shares important information looking at research that confirms the link between back pain and increased mortality risk.
A 2016 issue of The Journal of the American Medical Association estimated medical costs associated with back pain along with neck pain had increased by 65% between 1997 and 2005, to about $86 billion a year.
Research from the Faculty of Health Sciences reported older people with back pain have a 13% higher chance of dying prematurely.
This is a significant finding as many people think that back pain is not life–threatening. We most often associate the cause of death to the last diagnosed illness , sickness or disease process prior to the death. We now know that long term pain can be considered a co-morbidity factor (along with others), that had previously not been considered.
Reports also determined medications to most likely not be effective and those with back pain that opt for surgery often find little no relief with possible poor outcomes as a result of that surgery.
So, you are probably asking yourself right now, what do you do if you have back or neck pain?
A study by Leeman, Peterson, Schmid, Anklin, and Humphrys, looked at patients with acute and chronic lumbar herniated disc pain under chiropractic care.
They found the patients reported 80% improvement at 2 weeks, 85% improvement at 1 month, and a 95% improvement at 3 months.
The study concluded that the patients stabilized at both the 6 month and 1 year marks following the onset of the original pain.
Another study by DeVocht, Pickar, & Wilder found through objective neurological testing that 87% of chiropractic patients with severe muscle spasms in the low back exhibited decreased spasms which prevented future problems and disabilities.
Chiropractic Care is a safe effective treatment for neck and back pain and one that may help decrease your chances of dying prematurely.
