Chiropractor Sharpsburg GA - Should Children’s Tonsils Be Removed?

Tonsil removalIn this weeks video health tip, Dr. Matthew Davis, director of Crossroads Chiropractic, takes a look at the potential side affects from removing a child’s tonsils and adenoids.

Nearly 400,000 tonsil and adenoidectomies are performed by general surgeons every year in the North America.

Typically the procedure is done when a child is plagued by tonsillitis, inflamed adenoids, ear infections and sleeping issues commonly referred to as sleep apnea.

The procedure was thought to diminish the chronicity of the issues. But, instead what has been found is that the the tonsils and adenoids produce cells and cytokines that help the body kill germs naturally. Now, the accepted school of thought is that by removing them, you may actually be decreasing a child’s ability to fight respiratory infections as they become adults.

A Danish research study followed nearly 1.2 million children for up to 21 years with 5% having had their tonsils or adenoids removed by age 9.

They reported that:
• Children who had tonsil removal had 3 times the risk for upper respiratory tract diseases afterwards.
• Children who had their adenoids removed had double the risk for infections, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and eye infections.
Children who had both their tonsils and adenoids removed also had increased risk for allergies.

If you find that your child's doctor is recommending a tonsil removal or adenoidectomy, we encourage you to engage them in a healthy conversation and go through the benefits or possible risks to make the best decision for your child and your family.
