Chiropractor Sharpsburg GA - Statin Drugs and Exercise

statin drugsIn this weeks video health tip, Dr. Matthew Davis, director of Crossroads Chiropractic, takes a look at statin drugs and their affect on your ability to exercise.

Statin drugs are prescribed when a patient needs to lower their cholesterol. By lowing cholesterol the goal is to reduce the risk for heart attacks and strokes.

But what recent studies show is that taking statins will limit your ability to exercise and if you compete in sports you may be finding that difficult.

Your muscles get their energy during exercise from the mitochondria of the muscle cells. Statins decrease the number and functions these cells thereby limiting your muscles performance and ability.

The study showed that 50% of the participating who were on long-term statin drugs appeared to tire more quickly during peak exercise because they had lost some of their ability to take in and use oxygen; which suggests that statins interfere with a person's maximum ability to exercise long and hard, even in people who have no complaints.

Research supports that strict lifestyle changes including:

  • A diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nut and seeds
  • Avoiding sugar added foods and drinks
  • Avoiding red meat, processed meats and refined grains
  • Daily exercise and avoiding smoking and alcohol can be as effective as statins in lowering high blood levels of the bad LDL cholesterol and reducing your risk for a heart attack.
